DHUSAMAREEB (Halbeeg News) – Somali national army (SNA) has confirmed that a senior Al-Shabaab leaders had surrendered to Somali authorities in Galgaduud region.
According to SNA statement, Ali Ibrahim surrendered to Somalia’s elite Gorgor unit on Tuesday in Dhusamareb town.
Ibrahim reportedly acted as head of the militant group’s medical department in Galgadud region.
The defector admitted to having taken part in many battles in Galmudug.
The development comes amid Puntland and Galmudug states agreed to launch joint operations against al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia.
According to a meeting between the states, the forces will co-operate on liberation of villages and towns in Mudug region.
Early this week, officials from Puntland state handed over military equipment and vehicles to the Galmudug administration.
The donation includes eight military pick-ups, one ambulance, a water tanker and other military equipment.
Puntland officials said the move is part of the neighbourliness, co-operation and collaboration between the two administrations so that their people can live in peace.
Fiqi thanked Puntland for its support in liberating Galmudug from Al-shabaab.
The development comes amid counter attack between Galmudug state forces backed by Somali military al-Shabaab increased in Mudug region.
Al-Shabaab fighters last week stormed a military base in Amara town, prompting fierce clashes with Somali forces.
The group in a statement claimed to have seized 14 military vehicles during the attack.
