KISMAYO (Halbeeg News) – A senior al-Shabaab operative was killed in a joint operation conducted by US-trained Danab Special Forces and Jubbaland Darawish forces in southern Somalia.
According to a statement by the military, the joint forces launched a security operation against al-Shabab fighters in Turdho village of the Lower Jubba region.
Arab Dheeg Ahmed, Commander of the 5th Brigade of the 16th Battalion of the Danab Special Forces identified the senior al-Shabaab operative killed in the operation as Aruriyow Mohamed Omar.
The forces also killed 12 other al-Shabaab fighters in the operation.
The latest victory by the government forces was welcomed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
“I congratulate the national army and Jubaland forces on their victory in Friday’s operation. The federal government is stepping up its efforts in ongoing operations. The liberation operation is going well in this state, and I applaud the Jubbaland leaders and its people for working together to liberate their areas.”
The Somali government has recently intensified operations against al-Shabaab fighters in south-central Somalia. The government claimed to have killed hundreds of fighters in months-long fighting against Al-Shabaab.
