An Al-Shabaab military commander has defected and surrendered to Somali government forces Bardhere town of Gedo region ahead of intense offensive against the group across Somalia.
The official identified as Abdinuur Adan was head of Al-shabaab villages between Bardhere and Fafadun towns, prior to his give in the he communicated to the elders and his relatives who persuaded him to leave the group.
Jubbaland officials declined to comment on Adan defection to the government as investigation into his case are underway.
Al-shabaab members defecting to Somali government have increased significantly since last Mogadishu truck bomb in October that claimed the lives of over 500 people.
According to Somali government, over 70 Al-shabaab fighters have defected to the government from the date the former deputy leader of Al-shabaab, Mukhtar Robow deserted the group.
Last month, Adan Ibrahim, who was group’s tax collector had surrendered himself to Jubbaland forces in Dollow town of Gedo region.
