MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali security forces alongside local clan militias have successfully destroyed two vehicles packed with explosives in the north of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
According to a statement by the Somali military, the allied forces seized the Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBEIDs) during a security operation against Al-Shabaab fighters in an area near Bal’ad town.
SNA Commander Abshir Sitiqey said two vehicles were to be used for VBIED attacks by al-Shabaab.
“The forces launched an operation to hunt down al-Shabaab fighters in the Middle Shabelle region. We found two vehicles laden with explosives which were to be used for attacks to massacre the civilians. The vehicles were parked on a farm on the outskirts of Bal’ad town,” Sitiqey said.
The seizure of the vehicles comes barely three days after Somali security forces destroyed two vehicles laden with explosives in the Middle Shabelle region.
Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala said the two vehicles filled with explosives were at a farm in the region.
According to the minister, al-Shabaab was planning to use the vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED) to attack Mogadishu, but the group’s mission was preempted by the security forces who destroyed the vehicles.
Al-Adala also said the security forces backed by international partners killed 61 Al-Shabaab fighters in an overnight joint operation carried out in the Hawadley area.
He said the allied forces conducted a special operation targeting 150 Al-Shabaab militants who were intending to attack Somali National Army (SNA) forces and local forces in the area.
Forces of the National Intelligence and Security Agency with the support of international partners also wounded several militants after conducting a special operation against them at the Hawadle area in the Middle Shabelle region overnight.
