MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali aviation minister, Mohamed Abdullahi Salah Omaar has confirmed the arrest of a passenger carrying tear gas in his suitcase at Aden Adde Airport in Mogadishu on Saturday.
Speaking to VOA Somali on Monday evening, minister Omaar said the Somali security agencies are investigating the case and will share the details with the media once the investigation process is concluded.
He underscored that there is no reason to raise alarm regarding the security of the airport facility saying agencies are working round the clock to make sure the safety of all passengers travelling at Somalia’s main airport.
The unnamed British citizen was to board Ethiopian airlines flight from Mogadishu before his detention following airport security check that revealed tear gas canisters in his suitcase.
The security of Adden Abdulle International Airport was heightened following botched explosive attack on Dallo airlines on February 2016.
The explosion on the Daallo Airlines Airbus 321 flight happened about 15 minutes after take-off when the plane was at around 11,000ft (3,350m) and the cabin was not yet fully pressurized.
It made an emergency landing at Mogadishu airport, aborting its flight to Djibouti.
The explosion that left a hole in the plane’s fuselage killed the suicide bomber.
Two people were since sentenced to life in prison for masterminding the laptop bomb attack by the military court.
