13 Somali migrants repatriated from Libya reached Mogadishu today. The plane carrying the returnees touched down Mogadishu airport at around midday.
The returnees received warm welcome by government officials and family members who were in the airport since morning.
The evacuated migrants were held in jails controlled by militias at Tajora and Seka reas in Libya, Somali officials confirm.
Somalia’s ambassador to EU, Ali Saed Fiqi, who spoke to state owned radio on Tuesday confirmed that the migrants who were stranded in Libya for long were evacuated after they were convinced to return to their mother country, Somalia.
“These young boys were released from the Libyan jails and they will be repatriated to Mogadishu. They will be stopping over at Tunis and Stanbul airports before proceeding to Mogadishu,” said Fiqi.
Last month, the federal government of Somalia has succeeded to evacuate first batch of Somali returnees comprising of 11 migrants from Libya.
Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia Mahdi Mohamed Guled who received the migrants in Mogadishu said the government is committed to bringing back the prisoner in foreign countries.
He added that the government has earlier returned prisoners and Somali migrants back from Ethiopia, Seychelles and India.
