GARISSA ( Halbeeg News) – Muslim religious leaders in the Ijara district, Garissa county in North Eastern Kenya issued a new fatwa to boost marriage among the young population in the area.
The religious leaders have put in place new rules for bride price and wedding ceremony in a bid to end what they described as extravagant spending by couples.
The new rules make the dowry of four cows illegal and put only four goats for the wedding feast.
Also recording or photography not allowed and no convoy for the bride except two cars.
The new religious edict will take effect on 1st December.
Young unmarried men in the area have welcomed the new move which gives them the upper hand against women of their choice that used finance as the only excuse.
What remains to be seen now is the implementation of the new marriage rules in the majority Muslim district.
Other surrounding towns are expected to follow the suit.
