GAROWE (Halbeeg News) – The dispute resolution committee of Puntland state has announced the state election schedule on Thursday.
The committee has declared 31st December as the last day to submit the names of the new elected regional assembly members for documentation.
In the timetable, the regional parliamentary members are set to elect the speaker of the house on 3rd January next year.
The house will then select Presidential election coordination team on 5th January 2019.
The long-awaited regional Presidential election will take place on 8th January.
Twenty-four candidates including the incumbent president of the state, Abdiweli Ali Gas are vying for the post.
Security has been beefed up in the regional administrative capital, Garowe ahead of the crucial election. Hundreds of soldiers have been deployed in and around the city.
The presidential candidates are conducting the campaigns in Garowe and the major cities of Puntland.
Economy, Security, and relations with federal government are among the key immediate challenges that the new President needs to deal with.
