Garowe (Halbeeg News) – Puntland Deputy Speaker Mohamed Shire Baari survived an attack by suspected Islamic State militants at Dharjaale, Bari region early Tuesday.
Preliminary reports suggest foreign fighters participated in the attack, with one detonating a suicide vest and others engaging in a gunfight with Puntland forces.
The forces ultimately neutralized all militants involved in the assault.
The attack comes amidst a warning by the United Nations that IS-Somalia’s strength has grown significantly, with an estimated 600-700 fighters strengthened by an influx of foreign operatives.
A large-scale offensive targeting the militant group is underway in the Alimiskat mountains, a known militant stronghold.
