GARISSA (Halbeeg News) – Dadaab MP Mohamed Dahiye has urged Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta to re-open the customs and immigration border point in Liboi so as to monitor movements of people and goods that enter and come from Somalia.
Dahiye who spoke in Garissa where he opened a new hotel, said that the government will secure millions of shillings if the border point is reopened.
“In the face of the current financial crisis in the country, opening the three border points of Mandera, Liboi and Kiunga will bring in good revenue for the President’s Big Four agenda,” the legislator said.
The country is losing billions of shillings in revenue to unscrupulous traders who sneak in goods through illegal entry points, Dahiye said.
“Our people largely depend on doing business as their source of income. Livelihoods, trade, and movement of goods and people will be facilitated and in turn, change the livelihoods of our people,” said Dahiye.
He noted that the initial plan was to have a fully equipped border control unit with immigration officers, custom, revenue team, and security personnel.
