WASHINGTON (Halbeeg News) – Somali President Hassan Sheik Mohamud has travelled to the United States to address the United Nations Security Council amid the government plans to launch offensives against al-Shabaab fighters.
According to Villa Somalia, the President was scheduled to address the Security Council briefing discussing the situation in Somalia.
“He will later address the Security Council in New York on the situation in Somalia, discussing political and security developments, the fight against terrorists, efforts to lift the arms embargo, and stabilization in newly liberated areas,” the statement reads in part.
The UNSC imposed the arms embargo on Somalia in 1992 to cut the flow of weapons to feuding clan-based strongmen who toppled leader Mohamed Siad Barre the previous year, plunging the country into civil war.
Somalia established a functioning transitional government in 2012 and has been working to rebuild stability in the face of armed attacks and one of the worst droughts the country has experienced that has brought thousands to the brink of famine.
Since last year, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been seeking support from all countries in the Horn. He has won over most of them. Kenya, which had voted for all the UN resolutions extending the ban arguing it needed complete crackdown on al-Shabaab, has since vouched for Somalia to be re-equipped.
In February this year, Somalia’s neighbours approved Mogadishu’s request for an all-out war – including its need for lethal weapons and coordinated support to – annihilate Al-Shabaab fighters.
