MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s International Partners have commended gains made by the country’s forces in taking back territory under that was under the al-Shabaab’s control.
During a meeting with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the envoys pledged to support Somalia in its efforts to deliver aid assistance to the people in the liberated regions.
The meeting was attended by Ambassadors of the United States of America, United Kingdom, Italy, Ethiopia, Special Representatives of the United Nations, European Union, and African Union.
On his part, President Mohamud vowed to continue anti-Shabaab operations led by Somali forces and the clan militias in southcentral Somalia.
The president lauded the brave soldiers and the locals who succeeded liberating many areas in Lower and Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan and Galgadud, saying the people and the government of Somalia are united against Al-Shabab.
Somali forces backed by clan militias have recently intensified operations against al-Shabaab. The forces so far liberated dozens of villages and towns in southcentral Somalia.
Despite losing territories to Somali military, al-Shabaab is still capable of carrying out dead attacks in major towns and in areas where the government forces are based.
Al-Shabaab on Wednesday carried out twin car bombings in Mahas town in Hiiraan region, killing at least 20 people mostly civilians. Dozens other were wounded in the explosions.
The group said in a statement that their fighters targeted military bases in the town.
