MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has directed political rivals in Southwest state to end the political crisis in Baidoa town.
The president condemned the armed clashes which took place in Southwest state.
“Put the guns down and try to resolve the differences at the negotiating table. After 32 years, it is very bad that we point guns at each other,” the president said.
The remarks of the president came hours after Southwest security forces and clan militia forces loyal to a group of opposition candidates clashed in Baidoa town. The clashes killed more than ten people including combatants.
Somalia’s Lower House Speaker, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Noor Madobobe, said that Friday’s violent clash in Baidoa was intended to derail a reconciliation meeting scheduled for early January.
The Speaker of Somalia’s Parliament issued a press release on Friday evening calling for an immediate end to the bloody conflict and for both sides to settle their differences through dialogue
Southwest parliament extended President Abdiaziz Laftagaren’s term by one year three years ago, and it expires on December 19, 2023. However, the opposition opposed the president’s term extension.
