MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on Thursday vowed his government would be committed to resolve challenges faced during the biometric army registration.
Speaking at ceremony held for Somali National Army 59th anniversary of establishment, President Farmajo said his government succeeded to come up with well orchestrated system to register Somali armed forces.
“The registration is a kind of change, some people do not like changes therefore we faced challenges, we planned to face the obstacles and finally we made it and we reached a stage where we know the number of our soldiers,” said the president.
The president noted that his government had been mulling the process, its impacts on the country and the fight against al-Shabaab.
“Every day and every month, we had been postponing part of the process thinking if it could be misunderstood, fear of mutiny and some other issues which could happened, even sometimes it was very difficult to generate personal accounts for the soldiers,” he stated.
Somalia’s Finance ministry is carrying out army biometric registration centres in Somali capital.
The process which is jointly spearheaded by the office of the prime minister and the ministry of finance is part of reforms aimed at the security sector in the country.
According to military officials, the country has 16,000 registered SNA personnel and estimated 20,000 regional forces.
