ANKARA (Halbeeg)- The newly inaugurated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoģan has unveiled a cabinet composed of a mix of technocrats, loyalists and business figures hours after he was sworn in on Monday in Ankara.
The number of ministries under the presidential system has been reduced from 26 to 16 and the number of those dealing with economic matters is halved to three.
Erdoğan appointed Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar as the new defense minister and his son-in-law Berat Albayrak as the Treasury and Finance Minister in a 16-seat surprise cabinet with not much known bureaucratic figures
Mevlut Cavusoglu will remain as Turkey’s foreign minister and Suleyman Soylu as the country’s interior minister.
Fuat Oktay, a high-ranking bureaucrat, has been named as the sole Vice President.
During his speech, Erdogan stressed a powerful executive presidency is vital to drive economic growth and ensure security.
The executive system of government that began with Erdogan’s swearing-in scraps Turkey’s parliamentary governance structure and boosts the powers of the formerly ceremonial presidency.
“One of the most important democratic transformations of our country in its history has been successfully completed today,” Erdogan said.
