MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)– Somalia will not lift the ban on Khat importation until further notice, the president directed the cabinet.
According to sources privy to the development, president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo have ordered the ministers drop the agenda of lifting ban Khat during Thursday’s weekly meeting.
President Farmajo said the country could not allow the import of the stimulant drug from Kenya and Ethiopia.
The development comes barely two days after Kenya reportedly dispatched delegate to Somalia for discussion over Khat importation.
Somali authorities have suspended the importation of Khat last March after the Horn of Africa nation confirmed the first case of novel Coronavirus in Somalia.
For the last month, Somali authorities turned back two Kenyan planes ferrying khat from Nairobi.
According to Kenyan Khat farmers, the rejection of the planes had caused huge losses to the traders.
Last week, Kenya Khat farmers’ association said the farmers counted 180,000 USD after Somalia rejected permission for the planes.
