BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – Somali have issued a security alert over possible attacks in the country in the administrative capital of Southwest state.
Baidoa Police commissioner, Mukhtar Mohamed Ibrahim said security agencies have obtained credible intelligence suggesting that Al-Shabaab is planning to carry out attacks in the town.
He asked the public to be extra vigilant and to collaborate with the security forces to beef up the security of the town.
“We have credible intelligence suggesting that the Al-Shabaab group is planning to carry out further attacks in Baidoa town,” said Mr. Ibrahim.
A ban on ‘Bajaj’
Al-Shabaab has in the past carried out attacks in Baidoa town, which claimed dozens of lives.
Mr. Ibrahim said the law enforcement agencies imposed a temporary ban on motorbikes and autorickshaws operating Baidoa town.
“Our credible sources and intelligence reports indicate that Al-Shabaab plans to use bajajs (autorickshaws) and motorbikes laden with explosive to execute attacks in the town,” he stated, “Therefore We decided to temporarily impose ban operations of Bajajs and motorbikes.”
Located about 250 km northwest of Mogadishu, Baidoa serves as the headquarters of Southwest state.
Al-Shabaab fighters lost the control of the town in 2012 after its fighters were defeated by Ethiopian forces.
