MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Police in Jigjiga town this week impounded two trucks carrying commercial goods with more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition.
The trucks, which intercepted by the police were carrying the ammunition which covered with commercial goods in order to conceal the illegal consignment.
The ammunition seized by the Ethiopian police were being smuggled from neighbouring Somalia, according to Ahmed Mohamed Mahad, deputy commissioner of Jigjiga Revenue Authority.
Mr. Mahad said the police confiscated the first truck over charges of failure to pay tax.
” The police seized a lorry carrying goods which had not been taxed but after searching the officers found 2500 rounds of ammunition of which 16000 (7.62 caliber 39mmrounds) bullets of AK47,” Mahad said.
The police also confiscated another truck carrying 100 rounds of ammunition.
” The police confiscated another truck transporting goods and ammunition. Both trucks are at Jigjiga police station,” he said.
He said that the driver and owners of the vehicles were arrested.
“Arrests had been made and investigations were underway to establish whether the suspect was part of a syndicate,”
