MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali President Mohamed Farmaajo said Thursday he was suspending the powers of Prime Minister Mohamed Roble to hire and fire senior government officials in yet another rift that could destabilise the country and cast uncertainty over the ongoing elections.
According to a statement from Villa Somalia, Farmaajo took the step because the PM took ‘unexpected steps that can lead the country to political and security.’ The statement further noted the PM had attempted to violate the rights of the Armed Forces regarding their salaries.
The PM, the statement added, had failed to consult the president on decisions including appointments of senior officials.
“The powers of the Prime Minister and all correspondence, especially dismissals or appointments, have been suspended pending the completion of the country’s elections,” the statement read in part.
The announcement follows running feuds between the two leaders that have seen both leaders appoint parallel heads of the National Intelligence and Security Agency.
Bashir Gobe who was appointed by PM Roble as head of NISA announced Wednesday Muhidin Jimaale as the head of intelligence in Mogadishu.
Roble also rejected Farmaajo’s directive appointing a five-member committee to investigate the death of NISA agent Ikran Farah. Roble directed the military prosecutor to ignore the president’s order and proceed with the investigations.
