MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre has today launched Somali National Identification Registration Agency Conference in Mogadishu.
PM Barre has expressed deep gratitude to all partners engaged, with special recognition given to the National Identification and Registration Authority’s (NIRA) great leadership and tireless workforce.
The PM reaffirmed that the implementation of the National ID will assist the Somali people in overcoming the numerous socioeconomic issues that impede their growth potential, while also furthering democracy and the rule of law.
Barre also underlined the government’s commitment to ensuring that Somali citizens have equal rights in participating in all national obligations.
Somalia for the first time in three decades started rolling out the issuance of National Identification cards, as the country rolls out massive registration in what would allow authorities to easily identify citizens.
The country’s civil registry collapsed in 1991 after the ouster of Siad Barre, leading to disorder and confusion which has systematically degenerated into chronic instability, affecting economic growth in the process.
The country has suffered internal problems with the identification of persons being the elephant in the room.
