Somali parliamentary committee for economy, trade and Industry of federal government held discussions on the new taxes imposed on traders amid traders protests in Mogadishu’s main market, Bakaro entered its second day.
The chairman of the standing committee, Mohamud Abdirahman Benebene said the committee will be discussing over means to ease the standoff between Somali government and the traders.
He noted they would hold talks the businessmen in the capital on the introduction of the 5% sales tax on all goods sold and services rendered.
The meeting between the committee and the traders is anticipated to take part resumption of business operations in market.
Hundreds of traders in Somalia’s Bakaro market on Sunday shut down their business premises in protest over the new tax hikes.
The traders accused the ministry of finance of turning a deaf to their calls to engage talks with them.
The trade unions vowed to continue the strike until the government will drop the taxes.
Last week talks between Finance ministry and the union collapsed after the ministry insisted on the enforcement of the levies.
The sides traded stern statement which led some of the businessmen to refuse to offload their consignment from Mogadishu port.
The ministry vowed to enforce the levies this week saying the port and goods sold taxes are still low and affordable
