MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least twelve presidential candidates have today started three-day meeting in Mogadishu ahead of the country’s elections.
The candidates mainly opposition figures will have deep discussion over ways to resolve their differences in order to face the incumbent president.
According to sources, the candidates will also discuss ways to select commonly agreed candidate.
Among those in attendance are immediate former prime minister Hassan Khaire, former presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former South West leader Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, Abdirahman Abdishakur, the chairperson of Wajir Party and Abdikarim Guled, former leader of Galmudug.
Previously, the candidates among them two former presidents in Somalia threatened to boycott the upcoming elections, citing interference by the incumbent President Mohamed Farmaajo.
They would not take part in the upcoming poll unless the membership of the elections committee is reviewed.
According to their statement early this month, Farmaajo who is seeking a second term has packed the Federal Elections Committee with intelligence officials, civil servants and individuals close to him.
