MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – 52 Al-Shabaab fighters have been killed and dozens injured in aerial bombardment on Saturday.
In a statement, United States military said its military carried out an airstrike against Islamist group Al-Shabaab in Southern Somalia.
The military described the operation as self defence adding that the bombardment followed an attack on a Somali army base by heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters.
“US Africa Command conducted the airstrike in response to an attack by a large group of Al-Shabaab militants against Somali National Army Forces. We currently assess this airstrike killed fifty-two militants,” a statement from US Africa Command reads in part.
The statement comes on the heel of Jubbaland authorities claims saying over 70 Al-Shabaab fighters eliminated in a fierce fighting with Somali National Army (SNA) backed by the international partners in Southern Somalia.
Abdi Hussein Mohamed, Information minister for Jubbaland state told the media that the joint forces foiled the attack from Al-Shabaab at the base at Bar-Sanguni neighborhood near Kismayo town in Jubbland state.
“There was an attack by the terror group at Barsanguni at dawn,” said the minister, “the troops managed to repel by destroying three vehicles used by the group including UD lorry used to transport the militants, no casualties on our side.”
Al-Shabaab which lost the control of Mogadishu in 2012 continues to control several villages and towns in Southern Somalia.
