The number of flood victims in Bardhere town of Somalia’s Southern region of Gedo might shoot up as river level rises up, official.
River Jubba which stretches from Ethiopian Highlands through Gedo, Lower and Middle Juba regions broke its banks following the ongoing rains.
Food, clothes and properties of immense value were also carried away following the heavy rains that pounded the area and floods splashed by the river.
Hussein Abdi Halane, head of Social Affairs of Bardhere said 400 families of 3,000 people in the town are already homeless and in dire need of help.
“Several families have been stranded as the river level rose and broke its banks. So far over 400 families are homeless and need urgent assistance,” Halane said.
He noted that floods were proving to be a real menace and the local administration dealing with matter.
“Though, the problem is beyond our ability yet we are trying to do our best to help these people,” he pledged.
Mumino Isack, resident of Musawa village of Bardhere town said all her belongings have been washed away by floods following the heavy downpour and rise of the river level.
“I have nothing; all our properties have gone as our house submerged. We fled from the floods and we spending our nights this bare ground,” said Issak.
She appealed to the government and aid agencies to assist them with food.
“We are hundreds of families displaced by floods. Unless the government and aid agencies intervene urgently we shall starve to death or die for cold,” she appealed.
She also called on well-wishers and Somali traders to donate blankets and clothes to ease their suffering as they are now spending their nights out in the cold.
“Even if we get blankets and clothes I would assist us much. We have no blankets, jackets or even clothes to wear apart from the pairs we are wearing now,” she said.
