MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Over 160 lawmakers have opposed the impeachment motion against President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
The president was accused of abusing the oath of office and presidential powers by authorizing the illegal rendition of the commander of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) Muse Qalbi Dhagah from Somalia to Ethiopia.
The motion also accuses president Farmajo of signing “secret agreements” with the governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea and also of interfering in regional politics and of un procedural military appointments or abusing military codes.
In a letter signed by 167 lawmakers seen by Halbeeg News, the MPs dismissed the motion saying it was meant to create instability in the country and destroy the achievements gained by the federal government.
The lawmakers have called on the the speaker of Lower House, Abdirahman Mursal to rescind decision to push forward the motion against President Farmajo.
Mid this week, Mursal said the petition to impeach Farmajo was still valid despite the withdrawal of signatures from the petition by 14 lawmakers.
“The motion will proceed as per article 92 sub-article 1 and 2 of the constitution, and article 20 sub-article 2, of the house standing orders,” the speaker said.
He assured the lawmakers that the impeachment procedure would be properly followed through as per the provisional constitution and rules and procedures of the House.
The Administrative Director of the Legislative House, Mr Abdikarim Haji Abdi Buuh last Tuesday said that 14 out of 92 lawmakers whose signatures appeared on the motion denied to have signed it.
He said the 14 legislators said they did not support the motion which was filed on Sunday, noting that their signatures had been erroneously included in the petition.
The proposition has sparked political tension in the country as the Parliament is divided between those favoring impeachment motion and those backing president Farmajo.
