MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The government of Norway has rescinded its earlier remarks calling for swift transfer of power in Somalia, a move that angered the federal government.
In a follow up twitter post, Norway embassy in Somalia said it would like to clarify that what it hopes to see are swift and peaceful elections, based on consensus.
“Norway, as a long-term friend and partner of Somalia, is and always will remain impartial to the internal choices made by the Somali people,” the post reads.
The retraction of the embassy came hours after Somalia’s Federal Government warned international partners not to interfere in its internal affairs,
Somali Information Minister Osman Dubbe who spoke to the media said that partners should be mindful of what they write on social media, in what seems be aimed at the tweet of the Norway embassy.
“FGS (Federal Government of Somalia) urges our international partners and allies to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Within the tenets of international law, it’s illegal to intervene in a sovereign states’ internal issues. That is a red line that must never be crossed.”
The development come as the federal government is at loggerheads with Puntland and Jubbaland states alongside with the opposition who had been demanding president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to step aside, owing his mandated term was concluded last month.
