ABUJA (Halbeeg)- Nigerian government plans to revive the country’s national carrier after years the airlines ceased operation.
The Nigeria Airways which was founded in 1958 after the dissolution of West African Airways Corporation (WAAC) had ceased operations in 2003.
Mr. Hadi Sirika, Nigeria’s Aviation minister said the government now eyes to lunch a private sector-driven carrier.
According to the the minister, the government would commence the talks at the ongoing Farnborough International Air Show in the UK.
Mr. Sirika announced that the name and logo of the proposed airline would be unveiled during the UK air show saying that the airlines would commence operations in December
He said that negotiations with Boeing and other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) would take place in the UK.
The minister underlined that the UK air show was an opportunity to negotiate with airline manufacturers to get the most competitive and best value-for-money deals for Nigeria.
Mr Sirika explained that the show would provide an opportunity to establish a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Nigeria.
“Negotiations with Boeing and other OEMs. Met with Standard Chartered Bank earlier. All is looking good!” he said in a Twitter post.
Nigeria Airways did fairly well in the early 1980s, just before the departure of a KLM team that had been hired to make it efficient and profitable.
At the time of the dissolution, the airline whose operations were concentrated at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, was headquartered at Airways House in Abuja.
