ABUJA (Halbeeg News)- Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the delayed presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday.
The electoral commission said the decision was reached following logistical challenges and the elections will now be held on February 23.
“This was a difficult decision for the commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy, “Mahmoud Yakubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, said following an emergency meeting in the capital, Abuja.
The Governorship and local elections, earlier scheduled for March 2, will now be held on March 9.
Several states in Africa’s most populous country did not receive ballot materials hours before the delay was announced.
The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has objected to the decision to delay the elections.
“With several of their rigging options failing, they have to force INEC to agree to a shift in the election or a staggered election with flimsy excuses pre-manufactured for the purpose,” PDP Chairman Uche Secondus said.
Several citizens of Africa’s most populous country took to social media to express their disappointment over the decision to delay the elections.
The electoral commission offices in some states have been set ablaze, and election materials were stolen.
