Newly elected Parliament speaker of Somali parliament has officially resumed office barely three days after he won elections held on Monday.
Abdirahman Mursal Sheikh took office during heldĀ on Thursday in Somali capital, Mohamed.
Ministers, lawmakers, government officials, former speaker and the Parliament secretariat have attended the transitional event which took place at villa Somalia.
Mursal who is immediate former Somali Defense Minister took the office from his predecessor, Mohamed Osman Jawari.
The new elected speaker commended Jawari for his commitment and the tireless work he did during his tenure of Speakership.
He pledged to conduct the house business in accordance with the provisional constitution of Somalia as well as the Standing Order of the House.
For his part, Jawari pledged to work with the new parliament leader.
The new speaker who also served as Somalia’s ambassador to Turkey was elected on Monday in a hotly contested race to fill the office of the speaker.
Mursal garnered 147 votes in the third round of the speaker’s election, emerging ahead of Ibrahim Isack Yarow who got 118 votes.
Mohamed Sheikh Jawari who had been serving the office of the speaker since post transitional government in 2012 resigned last month after impeachment motion against him culminated in a month-long political dispute.
