BELEDWEYNE ( HALBEEG NEWS) – Authorities in the Hiran region of Hirshabelle state have warned against other possible floods in the area following ongoing rains.
Officials urged residents of Beledweyne who are mostly farmers to be extra vigilant about the new threat.
The city experienced recurrent floods year in year out that forced residents out of their homes to seek shelter in other nearby towns.
Most seasonal harvests in the Shabelle and Hiran regions which is the food basket of the horn of the African nation were submerged in the Xaga rains.
Some were displaced from their homes by the water from Shabelle and Juba rivers after they burst their banks on June towards the end of August and experts have warned that it will be difficult to cultivate new crops until the flooded fields become dry.
Challenges related to desert locust which affected some parts of the country has also contributed to low harvests.
The federal government through the ministry of emergency and humanitarian affairs has dispatched equipment to all regions to monitor climate change-related calamities such as floods in an effort to mitigate the impact.
