Mogadishu, (Halbeeg News) – The National Consultative Council (NCC) summit is set to take place on October 2nd 2024, in Mogadishu, a source close to government has confirmed.
The summit will bring together leaders from both the federal and regional states to discuss issues critical to national development including elections and security.
Sources however say that while a majority of Somalia’s regional leaders are expected to attend but Puntland’s President Said Abdullahi Deni who has been at odds with the federal government could be absent.
However, Southwest State President Abdiaziz Laftagareen will participate in the summit in what is believed to be progress made to ease tension with the federal government following a series of recent meetings between the two sides in Baidoa.
The South West state had opposed the federal governments demand to have Ethiopian troops serving under the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to withdraw from the region – a move the state authorities said could compromise security and enable Al-Shabaab to regroup and launch attacks.
The NCC is tasked with addressing pressing national concerns, with the October summit expected to focus heavily on Somalia’s electoral process and the country’s ongoing security challenges as well as the security landscape as ATMIS exit.
Elections remain a key point of contention, as the nation continues to navigate the complex transition from indirect to universal suffrage voting, a move that has faced delays due to technical, political, and security hurdles.
The federal government has continued its efforts to harmonize governance, delivery of social services and security across all regional states.
