ISTANBUL (Halbeeg News)- Representatives from Muslim countries will today meet in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss on means to resolve the enormous burden of the natural and human-made disasters.
In an interview with Hürriyet Daily News, President of the Turkish Red Crescent (Türk Kızılay), Kerem Kınık said a network among the national societies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries would be set up today in Istanbul to strengthen cooperation.
The network will focus on devastating tragedies in some of the Islamic countries including Yemen and Somalia.
“We will establish a network among the national societies, Red Crescent and Red Cross of 57 countries which are members of the OIC. This will be a platform to strengthen cooperation on issues like humanitarian aid, disaster response etc. There are similar platforms in the world, so we thought about replicating it for the Islamic world,” Kınık said.
He said it started with the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2016.
More than 50 heads of national societies will come to Istanbul to formalise this platform.
According to the president, the aim here is to share the burden, to prepare the societies to be more resilient against extraordinary situations and share it with one voice to the world and to do rights advocacy.
He noted that 75 per cent of the population in Yemen faces death due to famine.
