Mogadishu Mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman on Friday night hosted dozens of sufi sect leaders to a dinner following the conclusion of the 7th International Sufi Conference in Mogadishu.
Addressing the leaders after the dinner, Osman urged the religious leaders to help the government in the fight against extremism.
Osman emphasized the need for cooperation between the government and the religious leaders saying it is one of the ways to restore peace in the country.
“Somali people are yearning for the diligent work of the religious leaders and are compliant to them therefore we would you to strengthen your role in preaching peace and reconciliation within the society. The two are base in Islam,” said Osman.
He lauded Moalim Noor Foundation for its role to organize the conference.
Osman said the conference has showed the world that the capabilityof Somali capital, Mogadishu to hold international conferences.
“For Mogadishu host religious leaders from over ten countries is an indication of our commitment to restore our role and the status in World,” said the mayor.
A two day international Sufi Conference was concluded on Friday in Mogadishu.
In communique issued, the participants jointly agreed to step up the sect’s aims to spread the region in peaceful manner.
Religious schools run by the Sufi sect will established as to educate the society, according the communique.
The attendees have condemned extremism activities pledging the sect to take part in peace processes.
The imams and the scholars were drawn from UK, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, Sudan, Iraq, Sudan, Turkey, Senegal and among others.
The conference is reminiscent of last year’s 6th International Sufi Conference that was held in Turkey.
