Mogadishu mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman has pledged support for the people with disabilities in Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Osman who took meeting with representatives of the people living with disabilities (PLWD) said his administration is committed to pay special attention and care to the disabled people.
“My administration is ready to promote and continue comprehensive and common prosperity of disabled people,” the mayor said.
He pointed out that his administration would protect the equal rights and improve equal access to basic human necessities and services in the region.
“We are committed to promote equality between the disabled people and other society members in any aspect and give equal job opportunities to those (disabled people) who can work,” Osman pledged.
The mayor urged the public to unite in the protection of the disabled persons against discrimination and welcome them to mainstream society.
Osman stressed the importance of conducting public awareness campaign so as to bury the social stigma against disabled people.
“We need to launch public awareness campaign to to eradicate the social stigma against disabled people and to encourage the disabled persons to take part in the public life,” Osman underscored.
The recent years the people living with disabilities have staged numerous protests over lack of assistance and access to essential services.
Since 1990 when the country’s central government overthrown, the institutions and the legislations to protect disabled persons have not been functioning
