The termination of the lease contracts of city gardens by Benadir administration has angered local businesspeople in Mogadishu.
Hundreds of businessmen who met in Mogadishu on Friday complained to the authorities. The businessmen said the owners of the business were not consulted nor given sufficient time to think about the issue.
They expressing concern over directive of the mayor issued by the mayor.
Hassan Ahmed Mohamud, among the businessmen who read statement issued by the businesspeople said the decision taken by the government was abrupt and the businesspeople were not consulted on the termination of the deals they entered with former administration.
“We address our complaints through the media that we are not happy with the decision of Mogadishu mayor that cancelled the leases contracts we signed with the former administration. We call on the government to consider our complaints. We heard the statement of the mayor from the media, we were not consulted nor give ample time to decide on the legitimate deals we signed” read the statement in part.
They called on the government to respect the deals pay damages to the businessmen.
“We would like the government to consider the contracts or compensate us the million dollars used in erecting these buildings. We are Somali businessmen who endured difficulties and hardship that Somali people passed”
On Tuesday, Mogadishu Mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman has cancelled the lease contracts given to businessmen to manage the city’s recreation areas.
The contracts and garden licenses given to individuals have previously raised eyebrows.
In a statement dated 3rd July 2018, the Local Government of Mogadishu revoked all the agreements signed with the businessmen.
“The Mayor of Mogadishu and the Governor of Banaadir region has terminated and cancelled the deals on the control of the city gardens,” reads the statement in part.
The Mayor termed the agreements inked with businessmen as shoddy contracts.
