An outbreak of measles has claimed two lives in parts of Galgaduud region, health officials confirmed.
Over 147 children were admitted to Adado hospital after the outbreak hit several villages around Adado town.
Asha Abdulkadir Mohamed, a pediatrician at Adado Hospital said the deaths of two children occurred in the last 48 hours.
“We received 147 children, they are undergoing treatment, unfortunately the disease killed two children, one died at the hospital while undergoing treatment and the other one died on his way the hospital,” said Mohamed.
She attributed the outbreak of the disease in the region to lack of vaccination.
“The measles cases are not common in the region but the cases are going out of hands because most of the children affected had not been vaccinated,” lamented Mohamed.
Meanwhile, fifty five children were also admitted to various health centers in Galkayo with cases of measles, according to medics in Galkayo town.
Somalia’s social amenities have been crippled in 1990 when the country’s central government led by late Mohamed Siyad Barre was toppled.
The federal government which was established in 2004 has not yet taken over the country’s health facilities across the Somalia
