MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Maersk Line international container shipping company has announced the resumption of its services in Somalia on Saturday.
A vessel flying the giant shipping company flag docked at Mogadishu international port and was welcomed by the waiting guests including government officials, businesspeople, and Al beyrak management, the Turkish firm that runs the port.
Deputy minister for ports, Osman Mohamed Dallo who spoke during a welcoming ceremony at the port thanked Somali businesspeople for their efforts to lure shipping lines back into the country’s seaports.
“Today one of the biggest shipping companies is here to start its operations, and it is a great honour for the people and government of Somalia,” the minister said.
He added that the federal government of Somalia welcomes healthy business and investment opportunities that creates competition in the horn of African country.
Danish-based Maersk representative said his company would closely work with Somali business community to achieve their goal of sending products to global markets.
“We have been working long to achieve this, and we are happy and excited to be here today and closely cooperate with Somali businessmen,” Maersk representative said.
The new shipping line is the sixth company to resume services in Somali port since the return of relative calm mainly in south-central Somalia.
The move is set to grow the economy of the country by providing the avenue to export products made inside Somalia mainly livestock and farm produce and in return import tech know-how needed to increase yield.
Maersk Line is a Danish international container shipping company and the largest operating subsidiary of the Maersk Group, a Danish business conglomerate. It is the world’s largest container shipping company by both fleet size and cargo capacity, serving 374 offices in 116 countries.
