MANDERA (Halbeeg News) – At two least people have been injured after landmine hit a lorry near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
The lorry which was transporting potatoes to Mandera hit an explosive suspected to have been planted by Al-Shabaab on the Fino-Arabia Road in Mandera County.
The attack took place on Saturday.
Security officials have reached the area to ferry the victims.
Local authorities said the victims, among them the driver of the lorry, were all civilians.
According to medics, the two are now nursing injuries in Mandera Hospital.
Mandera County Commissioner, Kutswa Olaka who toured the scene has condemned the attack saying the IED is meant to harm the locals traveling along the road connecting Lafey and Mandera towns.
“It is unfortunate to witness such horrific incidents where unarmed civilians. But we cannot that the landmine did cause a huge loss as planned by those buried it here,” he said.
He directed the security agencies to launch an operation to hunt down the perpetrators.
“We need those behind this attack to be brought before the justice and we will be hunting them, security agencies should step up the operation to deal with these perpetrators,” he stated.
The commissioner urged the locals to work with the law enforcement agencies to secure the town.
“We need the public to cooperate with the security agencies to beef up security, without their help the task will very tiresome,” Olaka said.
