MEKELLE ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The former speaker of the Ethiopian Upper House Keria Ibrahim has surrendered to federal security agencies in Tigray regional capital.
The Ethiopia state TV confirmed the news of the top TPLF official who resigned from her position as speaker of the Upper house due to delayed elections in the country by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.
In a statement, the Government of Ethiopia has urged other TPLF leaders on the run to follow Keria’s path.
She is the most senior official after the former regional President Debretsion Gebremichael who is on the run after troops captured Mekele last week.
Keria previously served as Tigray Region Head of Civil Service and a Chief Administrator of Debub Misraqawi Zone before her election as an Upper House speaker in September 2015.
On Nov. 4, the government of Addis Ababa launched what it described as a law enforcement operation against the TPLF after the group attacked an army base in Tigray.
Heavy fighting led to the displacement of more than 41,000 Ethiopians to neighboring Sudan.
