NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Several staff members at Somali owned rehab centre in Somali dominated neighbourhood, Eastleigh of NAIROBI were arrested on Tuesday following a raid on the centre by the police.
This follows after an investigative documentary by BBC featured patients being tortured, whipped and forced to drink toxic liquid known as Harmala.
The Director Kenya’s National Authority for Campaign Against Alcohol Drug Abuse (NACADA), Vincent Muasya Chipukeezy who confirmed the arrest of the staff said the police closed Darushifa Rehabilitation Centre.
“Just to inform you that Darufisha Center in Eastleigh has been closed and the perpetrators arrested,” Ms. Chipukeezy said.
The centre which was housing dozens of patients has been operating illegally according to the director.
“The centre has been operating illegally and I would like to reiterate that we cannot support patients being abused physically or psychologically,” Chipukeezy said.
The documentary dubbed “Rehab Nightmare” showed several women at the institution claiming that they were locked for leaving their husbands and walking away from abusive relationships.
Reporter Jamal Osman who exposed shocking feature said the owners and staff members of Islamic rehab centres carry out torture and chains patients as they claim that they are offering help to drug addicts and mental patients.
