NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Kenya Parliamentary Defense committee has welcomed the construction of security wall along Kenya-Somalia border.
The committee along with several other politicians visited Mandera town near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
According to The Star, the aim of their tour was to assess the progress of the wall.
The construction includes walls, fences, other barriers and high-tech devices.
The chairman of the Committee, Katoo Ole Metito who met with local residents has called for the resumption of the wall construction.
Kenyan engineers said 12 kilometres of the wall has been built in the past year and expressed confidence that the work will be fast-tracked.
The barbed wire fencing is fitted with heavy wire mesh and concrete poles. A three-meter trench has been dug and a patrol road has been built.
In a meeting with the committee, Mandera County commissioner Kutswa Olaka said the ministries of foreign affairs of Kenya and Somalia were consulting about illegal structures built along the common border.
Others attending the Defense MPs’ forum included Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, Tharaka Nithi woman representative Beatrice Nkatha, Nelson Koech (Belgut), Dido Raso (Sako )and Maj Aden Bashir (Mandera North).
One of the residents, Suleiman Adan said security has improved since the wall was constructed.
“There have been no attacks for the past year unlike in the past when Al-Shabaab attacked up to 10 times a week,” he said.
Recently, Mandera East MP, Omar Sala had petitioned Parliament, saying residents wanted KDF withdrawn from Somalia due to many terror attacks.
