NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – The goverment of Kenya will be dispatching delegates to discuss with Somali authorities over Khat trade.
Agriculture chief administrative secretary Anne Nyagah told a Nairobi based newspaper, Business Daily that the country’s foreign Affairs ministry will now deal with the standoff between Kenya and Somalia over Khat.
“It will be initiated through Foreign Affairs,” said Ms Nyagah in reference to the demand for government-to-government talks.
This follows after Somali authorities turned back Kenyan traders who came to Mogadishu to convince Somali government lift the ban on Khat, calling for government.
The remarks by Kenya comes barely two days after Somalia doubled taxes levied on the leafy stimulant khat which is mainly imported from Kenya and Ethiopia.
A meeting bringing together Finance Ministers from Federal Member States and Federal Government last tuesday resolved to increase taxes levied on the khat from $2.5 per kilogram to $4.
