NAIROBI (Halbeeg News)- The Kenyan government has announced the allocation of more than USD 20 million to provide food for drought-stricken citizens.
Kenya’s Deputy President, William Ruto announced the plan on Monday saying his government has already released 2 billion Kenya shillings ($20 million) to provide food for 865,000 people from 13 counties affected by the food shortages.
They are Turkana, Isiolo, Garissa, Wajir, Kilifi, Baringo, Marsabit, Tana River, Mandera, Kitui, Makueni and Samburu
Deputy president, Ruto said there is no cause for alarm as the government has put in place intervention to manage the current drought adding that the authorities will work together hand in hand with humanitarian agencies to attend to the emergency situation.
The allocation of funds by the Kenyan government followed a social media outcry over a drought that has claimed nearly a dozen lives due to water and food shortages in some remote parts of the country inhabited mainly by the pastoralist communities.
Authorities reported that about 1.1 million Kenyans are suffering due to the drought’s effects, and as of Monday the death toll more than ten.
This action came after Kenyans turned to social media platforms and shared photos of emaciated drought victims to push the government to send urgent aid to Turkana county.
