NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Hundreds of Kenyan troops have been deployed along the Kenya- Somalia border to deal with Al-Shabaab threats in the Country.
In a statement, Kenya Defense ministry said additional military personnel was dispatched along the Mandera -Lamu border since it is prone to terrorist attacks posed by Al-Shabaab group.
The ministry stated that troops would work with police and other security agencies to clear explosive devices planted on roads.
“It’s a tedious process but Kenya Defence Forces have been deployed with minesweeping equipment and are already in operation. It’s a collaboration between key security agencies to ensure we don’t suffer more casualties,” reads the statement.
The development comes barely two days after North Eastern regional Coordinator, Mohamed Birik announced that the government will recruit 600 Police Reservists who will be posted at areas near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Mr. Birik said the reservists will boost security along the porous border that the Somali based Al-Shabaab terror group has been using to make incursions into the country
“When the recruitment is included, the new officers will be deployed in the counties of the former Northeastern region to beef up the security of the region,” he stated.
The government of Kenya has been carrying out operations to tightened the security of towns in Northern Kenya
Al-Shabaab fighters have staged a string of attacks in Kenya, including April 2, 2015 massacre at Garissa University that left 148 students dead and a 2013 assault on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall that killed 67.
