MANDERA ( Halbeeg News) – Kenya authorities have suspended Public transport playing across Mandera County to the capital city over a security threat.
Mandera County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom on Sunday announced the halt of the bus over what he termed as terror threat
“We received information that suspected al-Shabaab militants, who were targeting public transport, had been sighted along the Mandera-Rhamu-Elwak road on Sunday,” he said.
The commanders said the government dispatched security officers to launch security operations in the county to smoke out al-Shabaab from the region.
“Our officers are already on the ground to ensure that all is well before the public transport resumes,” said Mr Kosiom.
Mr. Kosiom said that buses coming into Mandera from Nairobi and Wajir will remain in Elwak town until the situation normalizes.
The development comes days after the Intelligence report issued by police indicated that over 40 fighters crossed the border into Kenya to carry out retaliatory attacks.
The group reportedly plans to attack public vehicles and bases of security forces in Mandera County.
Al-Shabaab has been carrying out attacks in Mandera in recent years to put pressure on Kenya government to withdraw its troops from Somalia.
