The government of Kenya has accepted to halt the construction of the Security wall along Somalia-Kenya border, Villa Somalia confirmed on Monday.
In a statement, Villa Somalia said President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta discussed on the controversial security wall between the two countries.
“On 24th March 2018, Somali President had telephone conversation with Kenyan President Uhuru over the border issue. The two Presidents agreed on ceasing the construction of the wall,” reads the statement.
The Presidency noted that two leaders also had discussions on the border dispute several times since last year.
“The President (Farmajo) talked with President Uhuru on the border issue during his state visit to Nairobi on 22nd March last year. The President also spoke to Mr. Uhuru over the phone on 22nd March 2018 and discussed on the border dispute,” the palace indicated.
According the statement, the leaders agreed on the formation of a joint committee to work on resolving the dispute.
“The Presidents acknowledged the formation of a joint committee led by governors of both regions to work on issue,” the statement noted.
Delegates from Somalia are expected to hold talks with Kenyan officials from on the border dispute on Tuesday, according to Gedo region governor, Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed who spoke to the media.
Kenya started constructing security wall along Somalia-Kenya border in 2015 after Al-shabab fighters attacked the border towns severally and killed over 200 people.
