MANDERA (Halbeeg News) – Kenya resumed construction of security wall between Somalia and Kenya after two hiatus, military official confirmed.
In March 2018, Kenya suspended the construction of the controversial security wall at the Mandera-Somalia border to quell tensions.
Speaking to local media in Somalia, a former Somali forces Colonel Aden Rufle in Beled-Hawa town on Somalia’s border with Kenya said Kenya deployed workers at the scene to continue the construction despite bilateral deal with Somalia to suspend to construction until further notice.
He urged the residents of the border areas to remain vigilant and prevent any attempts to encroach on their land, using the perimeter wall as a cover.
In the past four years, Somalia and Kenya had been discussing over the security programme initiated by the Kenyan government.
The construction has been slow since its inception in 2015 because the local community has to be involved at every stage
Kenya announced it would build a security wall to prevent Al-Shabaab militants from getting into the country, following the deadly April 2, 2015 attack at Garissa University College that left 148 people dead. Most of those killed were students.
The project was later changed to a wire fencing with a parallel trench. Eight kilometres have been so far completed.
