MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Kenya’s security agencies are on high alert over possible terrorist attacks days after al-Shabaab killed more than 10 people in attacks.
According to Nation Africa, a local newspaper based in Nairobi, Al-Shabaab fighters killed 13 people, including 10 security officers.
The paper reported that an intelligence brief shows the security agencies have heightened surveillance in Lamu, Mandera and Garissa counties over possible terror attacks targeting security forces operating in the area.
“More reports warn of an impending terror attack in Lower Garissa and areas around Boni Forest in Lamu County in Coastal Kenya. Based on previous sighting and threat reports, it is plausible a large number of militants will be deployed to conduct an attack in Kenya,” the report reds in part.
The move comes barely a week after seven Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed and several others injured after their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Baure area of Lamu, along the Bodhei-Kiunga road.
Another attack on a police vehicle killed three officers and badly injured three others in Mandera county.
The vehicle was transporting examination material to Mandera East, the county headquarters.
Al-Shabaab group has been attacking areas along Kenya-Somalia border while targeting mostly non- locals working in the region.
Many people, majority of them non- locals have as a result lost their lives with others left with permanent injuries.
The group vowed to continue staging attacks on Kenya’s soil until the East Africa nation withdraws from Somalia.
Kenya had sent its troops to Somalia in 2011 to fight al-Shabaab following several attacks in Kenya’s coastal region allegedly conducted by the terror group.
