NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Kenya security agencies have arrested two foreigners in Moyale while on their way to join the Al-Shabaab group in Somalia.
In a statement, the police said the two who were identified as Sadam Jafari Kitia (30) and Abdirahman Shaffi Mkwatili (25) lost their way to Somalia to join the al-Shabaab group.
“The suspects revealed that they were indeed heading to Somalia to join Al-Shabaab after being recruited and facilitated by their handlers in Tanzania,” the police said. “This is a trend that we have noted with recruits travelling to join either Al-Shabaab or Daesh, that they are provided with travel arrangements avoiding communications while on the way or asking people about the route to avoid raising suspicion.”
The arrest brings to five the number of suspects arrested in Kenya while heading to Somalia from Tanzania, aiming to join the terror network.
Recently, police arrested Abdul Saif Salimu, Zuberi Ngare Mtondoo and Seif Abdalla Juma in Garissa while heading to Somalia. The three were also from the neighbouring country.
In last two months, al-Shabaab increased attacks against Kenyan security and locals in Mandera, Wajir and Country which all have border with Somalia.
Al-Shabaab has been attacking areas along Kenya’s border with Somalia since 2011 when Kenya sent its troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabaab fighters.
Dozens of non-locals were killed and wounded in the attacks in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties.
There are thousands of Kenyan soldiers working under African Union Mission in Somalia.
