LAMU ( Halbeeg News) – Hundreds of Kenyan fishermen have resumed fishing in off the coast of Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Coast Regional Coordinator John Elung’ata said Kenyan forces improved security.
“We want normalcy to return to Lamu, from Hindi up to the border. Our fishermen have been afraid,” he said while touring the county after security meetings.
Elung’ata said that the government fishermen to start fishing with cautious.
He pledged that the government will give the fishermen safety gear including vests, good nets and boats.
“You can now go the distance and get the best stock. Don’t just stick to the shallow waters. Don’t fish within the high watermark … go into the deep sea, we want you to supply fish to Mombasa and Nairobi,” he said.
Mid last month, Kenya banned fishing activities off the Coast near the Somalia border over security concerns.
All fishermen were prohibited from carrying out their activities in Ras Kamboni and any other areas past Kiunga Town, all of which lay close to the Kenya-Somalia border.
Kenya claimed that the areas close to the border have had incidents of trafficking in contraband goods, drugs and called on its people to keep off.
